Dave Campbell's Texas Football — a fun read, but not gospel

June 18, 2013

Few things get me as pumped up about the upcoming football season as the day I receive my copy of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football in the mail.

Not that Campbell’s publication is the be all, end all of what will transpire during the season. Its predictions are often wrong, but it’s definitely a fun read if you are a fan of high school football and it contains a cavalcade of information on every team in the state.

Current, former Howard Hawks taken in MLB draft

June 13, 2013

Howard College's baseball program has a history of sending players off to the next level. Whether that level is a Division I school, a minor league squad or a major league organization, HC Manager Britt Smith can be counted on to root for their success.

This season, several Hawks, former Hawks and future Hawks have been eyed by the big league scouts. Topping the list of hopefuls is the 6'9'' David Palladino, a righty from Emerson, N.J. Palladino went in the fifth round and was taken as the 164th overall pick by the New York Yankees.

Coahoma, Forsan eliminated from playoff contention

May 20, 2013

CRANE — Fort Hancock may have ended Forsan's baseball season Saturday, but if you made the trek to Crane to watch the best-of-three, regional quarterfinal series you'd doubtlessly agree it was worth the price of admission.

The Buffaloes roared back after an 8-0 Game One loss on Friday to pummel the Mustangs 11-0 in the second outing Saturday. But in a hard-fought Game Three, Fort Hancock edged Forsan, 9-8 to move on to the Region 1-2A semifinals.

Disappointed with the loss — as any coach would be — Forsan Manager Jason Phillips still enjoyed being a part of such an exciting duel.

Hawks drop from tourney with loss to Grayson

May 15, 2013

GRAND PRAIRIE — Howard College's first order of business at the NJCAA Region V Tournament at QuikTrip Field was to find a way to win against No. 10 ranked Grayson College. The Hawks did just that, as they defeated the Vikings handily, 10-5.

After a 2-1 win over New Mexico Junior College and a 7-6 loss to Midland College, Howard was forced to face the Vikings, yet again.

This time, the Hawks found themselves on the receiving end of a 4-1 ballgame Tuesday — as well as eliminated from the postseason despite a solid effort by starting pitcher Diego Rodriguez and relief pitcher Blake Smith.
