Alvin Dudley Jenkins

Alvin Dudley Jenkins, 88, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at his residence in Big Spring, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Trinity Memorial Park Chapel with Mike Couch of First Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be held at Myers & Smith Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013.Dudley, son of Mannie and Mel Jenkins, was born April 27, 1924, in Abilene. Dudley served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific, including the liberation of the Philippines. After serving his country in the Army from 1943 to 1946, Dudley returned to Abilene, where he met Ora Ballew and they married April 14, 1947. During their years of marriage they lived in Abilene and San Angelo for a short time and settled in Big Spring by 1951 to make their home.Dudley worked as a city bus driver in Abilene, where he met his wife and spent a short period of time working at Banner Ice Creamery and then went to work for Texas Electric Service Co. in 1952 to begin a 34 year career ending as material coordinator. He made lifelong friends who became more like family to him through the years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and held numerous positions through the years.Dudley is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ora; daughters, Sandra Hughey of Odessa, Virginia Taylor and husband Dale of Big Spring; and one son, Bill Jenkins and wife Dolores of Big Spring.Also known as Papaw, he is survived by grandchildren, Raymond Jenkins of Merkel, Michael Jenkins and wife Amanda of Little Elm, Derek Hicks of Dallas, Ryan Hughey and wife Jana of Lubbock and Nina Armstrong and husband Mack of San Antonio; four great-grandchildren, Kameron Armstrong, Rylan Hughey, Whittany Jenkins and Mason Jenkins; step-grandchildren, Amanda Blissard and daughters Myka and Aubrey, Casey and Kara Taylor and children Azelyn and Casen and Jessica and John Raymond Barrioz and children Josalyn and Jaicie. He is also survived by a sister, Jody Miller of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; three sisters; and a son-in-law, Norman Hughey in 2009.Pallbearers will be Dudley’s grandchildren, Raymond Jenkins, Michael Jenkins, Derek Hicks, Ryan Hughey and Nina Armstrong. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Henderson and Jeff Alexander.In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association in research for COPD, 8150 Brookriver Dr. Suite S102, Dallas, TX 75247-4053; or Compass Hospice, 602 S.
