In response to a directive issued from President’s Barack Obama’s administration over the transgender restroom issue, Big Spring ISD officials said the district would not make any changes to its bathroom policy in a written statement released Friday.
According to George Bancroft, Big Spring ISD community relations coordinator, the district does not have a written policy on the issues and “has never needed one.” In this case, the district will continue to follow what has been the “historic norms,” Bancroft said which is sex segregated bathrooms.
On Friday, the departments of Education and Justice sent letters across the nation to school districts directing them to provide suitable bathroom and locker room facilities appropriate for a transgender student’s choice of gender.
