Garden City routs Hermleigh 75-41

Garden City cruised past Hermleigh on Tuesday, 75-41 in an area playoff match at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, but the score doesn't accurately reflect just how hard the Cardinals fought. The Bearkats had their hands full against a very physical Hermleigh team who played with a lot of heart, but couldn't keep up with state-ranked GCHS, who began pulling away late in the first period.Corbin Davis scored 26 points for the Bearkats, while Sam Miller added 16, Juan Bustos put up 14 and Austin Odom had 10 for Garden City.“(Davis) is a good scorer,” GC Head Coach Koby Abney said. “He did a better job tonight I thought of picking good spots. He can make some mistakes where he tries to force things a little too much, but he did a better job tonight of letting the offense come to him and not try to force it.”The Cardinals took a 5-4 lead two minutes into the outing, but the next shot — a three pointer by Davis — put the Bearkats back on top, where they would stay for the remainder of the game. A 17 point lead at the halfway mark was insurmountable for Hermleigh, who was outscored 31-14 in the final two stanzas.“Ive gone and watched (Hermleigh) play, I knew they were going to be physical,” Abney said. “I wasn't happy with our execution, I thought our execution hurt us more than anything. But, this time of year, your job is to win, it doesn't matter if it's by one or 100, you don't get style points. We did what we needed to do.”The Bearkats will meet May in a regional quarterfinal bout at Jim Ned in Tuscola on Friday at 8 p.m.“May is a different team,” Abney said. “We're going to have to do some different things against them. We will just try to get ready to beat them on that night.”Turnovers were the one major flaw in Garden City's game, and Abney said he will address that before the game against May.“That's the frustrating part,” Abney added. “We really worked on pressing and getting turnovers and then finishing. The press in itself is irrelevant if you don't finish. That's the only thing that bothered me, we didn't finish as well as I'd like us to. But, we'll try again tomorrow.”
