Hawks fight back in tourney with extra-innings wins

LUBBOCK — A day after suffering their first loss in the Region V Baseball Tournament, Howard College's Hawks clawed their way back into contention. In a day- and night-long affair at Dan Law Field here Tuesday, the Hawks first defeated Midland College 14-13 in 13 innings, then rallied in a late evening game to upend Weatherford College 6-1 in 15 innings.With those victories, Howard has the opportunity at some revenge. At 1 p.m. today the Hawks were to take on New Mexico Junior College — the team that beat them 5-1 on Monday.Brendan McCurry slapped a bases-loaded triple in the 15th inning to help the Hawks defeat Weatherford in the loser's bracket semifinal Tuesday night. Tony Calhoun had given HC its lead earlier in the inning with a single that scored Nathan Burns.Weatherford got its only run in the fourth inning and Howard tied the game in the top of the fifth. The Hawks managed 12 hits but had trouble pushing anyone across the plate until the 15th inning, when they got five runs.First baseman Chase Durham and catcher C.J. Manning got two hits each for the Hawks.Weatherford's one run came on eight hits. Howard used three pitchers in the marathon contest with Kyle Bartsch picking up the win. He went 4-2/3 innings and gave up just one hit, walked one and struck out seven. Carter Hahn went 7-1/3 innings, allowing six hits, giving up one walk and striking out seven batters. Derrick Bleeker went the other three innings. He allowed two hits and struck out one batter.Cass Ingvardsen took the loss for Weatherford.Tuesday morning's game was a slugfest through 13 innings with Howard College scoring five runs in the 13th and Midland coming up just short with four runs.Howard led 2-1 after the first inning and held a 5-3 advantage after the fourth. Midland rallied for a big five-run fifth inning. Howard got two more runs in the sixth and two in the eighth. Midland then tied the game at 9-9 with a single run in the ninth.Right fielder Burns led Howard with five hits, including two triples and a double. The Richland Hills native also scored twice and drove in three runs. Landon Steinhagen had three hits and also scored twice. Tyler Collins, Calhoun and Brendan McCurry had two hits each. Calhoun crossed the plate four times in the extra-innings contest.With the game tied in the 13th, center fielder Jordan Allen cracked a sacrifice fly to give the Hawks the lead. Steinhagen then rapped a two-RBI single and Burns nailed a two-RBI triple.Josh Walker took the win for Howard on 2-2/3 innings. He gave up seven hits, four runs, walked one and struck out four. Howard used six pitchers in the contest, with Bleeker picking up a save.Taking the loss for Midland's Chaps was Josh Stone.
