The Big Spring Lady Steers (23-8-1) will be taking on the Andrews Lady Mustangs (21-9-1) for at least the third and fourth times this weekend in their best-of-three regional quarterfinal. Big Spring beat the Lady Mustangs 4-1 in Andrews earlier this season, and had a game at home end in a 0-0 tie after lightning ended the game in the sixth inning.
“We know a little bit more about Andrews than some other teams since we played them twice early in the season,” Big Spring head coach Howell Martin said. “We’ve got a pretty good idea of some of their strengths and some of their tendencies. They’ve got a really solid pitcher that’s strong that shut us down that night. We had a rough night and really struggled against her, so we’re going to have to get out bats going against her.”
The Lady Steers will be trying to put an end to their early playoffs trend of struggling in game ones and dominating game twos. In their first round series against Borger, the Lady Steers won game one 4-3 thanks to the late game heroics of Jaci Aguilar and Mariah Sarmiento, and turned around to win game two 14-3. In their second series against Monahans, the Lady Steers lost game one 5-2 and won game two 11-1. Martin attributed his team’s Friday night woes to the strong winds of West Texas and the inability to hit with two outs.
