Steers homecoming Friday

The Big Spring Steers hope their homecoming celebrations will include marking one down in the win column this week, as they play host to the Greenwood Rangers at Memorial Stadium Friday night. The game will start at 7:30 p.m.The 0-5 Steers have shown remarkable improvement on defense over the last few weeks, but the offense — plagued by injuries — has sputtered, with last week's nine points coming in just above their season average of 8.2.But very few teams, including the 3-2 Rangers have gone out of their way to play the same teams Big Spring has been facing lately. Monahans and Midland Christian are two very tough teams and in both games, the Steers have been able to play with them —for half of a game at a time, any way.Greenwood does offer a slight decline in talent and intensity from what the Steers have had lining up against them recently, but that does not mean they should be overlooked. They are big and surprisingly quick, a fact which has not been missed by Big Spring's head coach, Phillip Ritchey.“Greenwood has a big running quarterback,” Coach Ritchey said. “They are going to spread things out and throw the ball around, but if you leave the quarterback alone, he will gain some yards on you.”In a season where the most noticeable trend has been an outmanned defense stepping up time and time again for the Steers until they just can not do it anymore, Greenwood offers a chance for them to finally play with a team they can match up with fairly evenly in the trenches. But Greenwood has been improving week after week, including their current two-game win streak with wins against 4A Lake View and then a 28-26 win against 5-3A's own Sweetwater this last Friday night.“This game will be a big challenge for our defense,” Coach Ritchey said. “We need to move the ball and give them time to rest between each series. The Steers hope to get some help in that department as wide receiver Toby Rodgers returns after missing last week's game due to an injury received at the end of the game in Monahans. How do the teams match up across the board?Big Spring — GreenwoodPoints per game:8.2— 24.6Rushing yards:115 —142Passing yards:106 —159
