Walter ‘Amos’ JonesOn Oct. 5, 2011, with the setting sun a great man left this world to be with God.Walter (“Amos”) Cameron Jones, born on Nov. 10, 1931, was surrounded by his family at the time of his death. Amos was a retired assistant chief of the Corpus Christi Fire Department, serving as the fire marshal in fire prevention. He faithfully served the fire department for 46 years. During the Korean conflict, Amos served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Champlain. He was a graduate of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, with a bachelor’s degree in education. Amos served on the fire science advisory committee and was an instructor at Del Mar College. Amos was also known as “Moose” in high school, where he excelled in basketball, football, and track. He was the star quarterback, student body president of the senior class, and vice president of the junior class at Big Spring High School in Big Spring, Texas.Our lives were indelibly touched by his example, quiet strength, and wonderful sense of humor. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. We will carry him in our hearts always and know that we will see him again in the life hereafter.Preceding him in death were his parents, Walter B. and Beatrice Jones, and brothers and sisters Jacqueline Martin, Gay Hart, Iris Baucum, and Gary Jones.Amos is survived by his loving wife, Mary, and two adoring grown daughters and their husbands, Marilyn Jones (Ed) Larsen and Cheryl Jones (Mark) Esparza. Amos was a doting grandfather to his four grandchildren and their spouses- Jennifer (Shawn) Kennedy, Andrew (Michelle) Jones, Stephanie Larsen, and Michael Esparza- and to his eight great-grandchildren- John, Matthew, Caden, Kathryn, and Hannah Kennedy; and Tyler Warren, and Ashley and Nicole Jones. Amos is also survived by his two sisters Beverlyn Jones and Norma (Pat) Patterson, and brother Isaac (Peggy) Jones. A visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011 at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel.
