AUSTIN — A new state champion will be walking the halls of Big Spring High School.
Big Spring’s Ian Gonzales won the gold medal in the 4A 800-meter run at the UIL State Track and Field Championships in Austin on Saturday, beating out Crandall’s Presley Butler by .22 seconds.
The win came after a rain and lightning delay that lasted nearly six hours. The 1A, 2A, and 4A teams that were scheduled to wrap up their races at 3:15 p.m. didn’t finish their last events until just before midnight. Gonzales wasn’t affected by the delay though, and followed his first-place finish with a silver medal in the 400-meter dash.
“I felt really good. I was really hoping to win the 800, and I knew I was going to have just a tiny bit of a disadvantage. But since we had the delays, at the end of the day it didn’t really matter,” Gonzales said. “And in the 400, we all had an even race, and it was anyone’s race in that moment.”
