City officials: Tax hike to pay for street work

Big Spring city officials are justifying a proposed 2-cent increase in the municipal property tax rate by saying it is the only way to finance $500,000 in street repairs this coming fiscal year.

Plagued by a shortage in potential revenue — both property valuations and sale tax receipts are expected to be down in the new fiscal year — and slashing the proposed budget by more than $1 million from the previous year, city officials said they had little choice but to recommend the tax increase.
