Lawsuit filed against city/former BSPD detective

A lawsuit has been filed in the 118th District court against the city of Big Spring and a former Big Spring police officer who was fired after he was indicted on multiple sex charges last year.
According to court records, the lawsuit was filed by a family member of a minor child, one of multiple victims who have made allegations against Joel Derek Rojo, a former Big Spring police officer. He was indicted and arrested in April 2016 on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges including indecency with a child and sexual performance by a child. Rojo was fired from the department in June 2016.
The plaintiff is requesting monetary damages of more than $100,000, the court records stated, for causing the minor mental aguish and physical pain along with mental anguish of her family.
Big Spring City Manager Todd Darden confirmed to the Herald this morning the city has received a copy of lawsuit and the matter has been referred to the city attorney.
