HAWK'S LATE RALLY NOT ENOUGH IN WJCAC HOME OPENER
The Howard College men's basketball team opened up WJCAC conference play at home Saturday afternoon as they hosted No. 14-ranked Midland College.
The Chaps (15-0, 1-0) jumped out to a 22-7 lead early in the first half which led to 40-22 lead at the half. Turnovers plagued the Hawks early in the game as they committed 12 alone in the first half. In the the second half, the Hawks cleaned up the turnovers as they outscored the Chaps 37-28.
Despite the second half effort by Howard College, the Hawks would ultimately fall short, losing 68-59 in their conference opener. Howard was led by Lorenzo “Trey” Fort who finished the game with 17 points. Howard's Dontae Horne contributed 15 points, while Deng Mayar chipped in with 12 in the loss.
The Hawks (10-5, 0-1) traveled to Western Texas College on Monday for its second conference game of the season. Results for that game will be in Wednesday's edition of the Herald.
LADY HAWKS GO TOE TO TOE WITH LADY CHAPS; HOWARD FALLS IN OVERTIME 72-67
The Lady Hawks also opened up WJCAC conference play Saturday afternoon at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum against Midland College and what a game it was. The Lady Chaps started the game off hot taking a 18-9 lead in the first quarter.
However, the Lady Hawks found their rhythm in the second quarter cutting Midland's lead by two to end the first half 28-26. The second half saw both teams battling it out as neither team took a commanding lead. By the end of regulation the score was tied up 59-59 and headed into overtime.
In overtime, the game was still evenly matched but Midland forward Luisa Anderegg hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Chaparrals a 68-67 lead in the final minute of the game. Midland guard Janay Quinn closed the game out for the Lady Chaps by making four free throws in the final 20 seconds to secure a 72-67 win
Howard's Malgorzata Byczkowska had a game-high 17 points, while Ann Mary Zachariah contributed 16 points for the Lady Hawks.
The Lady Hawks (9-7, 0-1) also traveled to Western Texas College on Monday for its second conference game of the season. Results for that game will also be in Wednesday's edition of the Herald.
